In terms of gameplay, it's pretty basic Skylanders. It's a simple third-person platformer with basic brawling and shooting action depending on your Skylander's powers, with some light puzzle solving and plenty of hidden areas and items. If you haven't played a Skylanders game, it's mostly comparable to the LEGO games. It's fun, accessible, and kid-friendly. I made an air elemental Sentinel named Vapor Waif who fights with a bladed staff (double-ended trident) and a magic elemental Sorcerer named Dan Castmeme who tosses magical energy bolts from a distance. Vapor Waif's close combat brawling is more direct and active than Dan Castememe's magic, but the magic provides more ranged options.

Xbox 360 and Xbox One systems are known to only work with their own designated portals and cannot use any portals from any other platform at all nor can their portals be used with any other platforms either. There's very little good to say about "Skylanders: Imaginators," other than that it retains a few of the standard things you'd expect the "Skylanders" series to have: some pretty visuals, decent music, and accessible gameplay for the younger audience it is geared for. So, at the very least, the game, as a whole, is functional, and it controls as smoothly as the other games in the franchise. And, at the very least, it is nice to see that some of the old "Skylanders," like Stealth Elf and Jet-Vac, actually play a role in this game's story. Note! The portals may light up regardless of what console it's connected to, but the games will fail to detect a portal that isn't compatible with the platform. Game Compatibility

Notably, the Nintendo Switch version of Imaginators does not feature a portal, instead using the NFC capabilities of the console's Joy-Con-R controller to communicate with Skylanders figures. The wireless portals for Wii and PS3 are the same and will work with either USB dongles regardless of platform. In Skylanders: Trap Team, a new portal dubbed the Traptanium Portal was created to include the Portal Villain Vault and a Trap slot for capturing Villains as well as use them in battle. The portal also has a built-in speaker where captured villains can talk through. This portal is very flat and has a blue ring acting as a railing. You can change almost any of your customization options for your Skylander at any time, with two major exceptions. Firstly, you obviously can't change your Skylander's element so that it's different from the Imaginite Creation Crystal element it's stored in. Secondly, and more troubling, you can't change your Skylander's combat class. Once you choose how your Skylander fights, it's permanent. It can look and sound any way you want, but it will only fight using that specific weapon type. You can't reset your Crystal, or at least not officially; some users have reported success using a Nintendo 3DS Skylanders game and a glitch to effectively wipe the Crystal, but it isn't officially supported. The older 3DS portal can connect to on any platform through USB connection with the exception of Xbox and mobile. When using a Nintendo 3DS portal in SuperChargers or Imaginators, the portal will have trouble detecting SWAP Force Skylanders, making them unplayable. SuperChargers was the first to break this rule, with its figures only being compatible with SuperChargers (and the later game Imaginators) despite having figures of some of the same characters from earlier games. This is because even though the characters themselves were familiar faces from previous games, their SuperChargers figures actually had redesigned skill trees, and in some cases completely different play styles than their earlier games' versions.
