Just like I noted in my TR-AMP Video Review, having one device that does everything is quite ideal, but let’s be honest, Q5s really does everything. You have your selection of BT codecs, which goes all the way in. Quite literally, there’s no limit to it, everything that exists, FiiO supports for their Q5s. Q5s-TC does the highs right , in the way that they are not overfloating or dreamy like in some Shanling DAP or other dongles adding artifical glare or contour to them , and they are not tamed at all. Highs are definitely nice , extended and well separated , they represent quite well what have been recorded and can be energic or leverage a little on stereo effect , which can make for an airier presentation too . Extra Screws, for the modular AMP modules, and an adapter for the optical input are also provided by FiiO, along with the manuals of Q5s. The handcrafting also stands at the highest level. It’s a pretty heavy DAC, especially for the mobile one, but the weight isn’t such a big problem thanks to the accessories. The whole device is made of metal, painted with powder coating in this space gray-ish color.

Even the sound is perfect, really dynamic, punchy and authoritative, especially if you enjoy a slightly smaller soundstage and if you’re looking for a personal experience, it should be perfect for you. I’ll do two paragraphs in the sound description. The first one will be standard-length, and the next will be shorter, describing the xDuoo XD-05 Plus when it works only as a DAC, enjoy! I decided not to do a separate paragraph for the Amplifier function because it sounds very similar to the XD-05 as a DAC/AMP. Of course the AM3D module is available with the micro USB port so current owners of Q5s can add the THX amp module sans the type C port. Ultimately, there’s something aesthetic about the Q5S. Its aluminum alloy casing and well-rounded corners are appealing to the eyes. Pros The xDuoo XD-05 isn’t mainly the stationary DAC, but if there’s a possibility to use it in only DAC mode, why shouldn’t I try?The Fiio Q5S is an improved version of the Fiio Q5. The Q5S is clearly ahead, thanks to its more advanced Bluetooth and DAC chips (CSR8675 and AK4493, respectively). To handle different types of headphones, the Signature has three modes switchable via controls on the sides. The power mode handles sensitive headphones and IEMs with a substantial drive requirement, while the turbo and eco mode fares well with high-impedance headphones and IEMs. And the normal mode is for medium sensitivity outputs. You will probably have to use EQ though, to lower the treble if you want to listen little bit louder. It features a power-efficient AKM4377 chipset on an 8-layer PCB board. In addition, there are AK8142 oscillators that help PAW S1 reach a stunning 123 dB S/N ratio and support up to DSD128 and 32-bit/384 kHz files.

xDuoo XD-05 Plus + FiiO FA9 (250 USD + 500 USD) – The pairing with FA9 is actually superb, if you don’t mind the slight hiss that’s always audible. Unless you like to listen extremely quiet, you won’t hear it, but you will hear the nice dynamics and punchy sound, colorful and warm midrange, and the excellent detail XD-05 Plus can pump into FA9.The FiiO Q5S is the brand’s portable DAC/AMP flagship. It enjoys a dual AKM DAC, a full balanced circuit, the same swappable amp system, and a better Bluetooth connection. Like Apple, the S at the end of the name suggests that FiiO only added a few upgrades, instead of making a completely new device. The Fiio Q5s-TC will possibly drive a large group of headphones , I tried it with different set of cans and it provided enough power for all of them , failed with none.
