About this deal

Made up of 2,354 individual pieces, the new LEGO® NASA Space Shuttle Discovery set is almost as impressive as the original it was inspired by (admittedly on a much smaller scale). But don’t let that intimidate you – as challenging as it is, it is also a rewardingly relaxing LEGO set to build. This looks so sexy, I feel I need to add a sensor bar. This is the biggest cluster of gears in the build. There will be another layer of gears, and on top of that comes the gear-box. The build actually begins with the construction of the Hubble Telescope, arguably one of the most important scientific instruments ever created by man, and it is a stunning rendition. Perhaps it’s the building techniques utilised, or maybe it’s the subject matter itself, but everything about the model feels like it has a very precise and measured design. From the offset Technic pins used for the telescope’s angled stand to the intricate design created by the yellow 1×1 tap pieces, every stage creates the feeling of building a scientific instrument. To announce the launch, Lego enlisted the help of astronaut Kathy Sullivan, a member of the crew of NASA’s STS-31 mission, which launched the Hubble Telescope on April 25, 1990.

A new star in the LEGO® NASA galaxy Add the new Space Shuttle Discovery to your LEGO® space collection. Good review! Now I want this set so desperately! I stepped into the dark ages around 1994, so I totally missed the release of this beautiful set!

Never had the space shuttle, i wonder if i could build it without the micro motor (my brother has that one), FOS and correct colours. Important note: We do not control this inventory and cannot currently make changes to it. Use it as a guide to the contents of the set, or to find out part numbers when requesting replacements. If I ever really get into financial problems, and need to sell everything to keep a roof over my head, this one stays. I rather sleep in an alley with this set next to me, than having a house without my space shuttle. Thanks for this heartfelt review, which brought me to buy this set when I found a good used bargain (I had been considering the 8480 for a while). After the build I spent some time thinking about reasons for the extraordinary appeal of this set even among today's Technic flagship models. In essence, I think it is its combination of simplicity in shape and complexity in function:

The set contains over 2,300 pieces and will take you the best part of six to seven hours (if not more) to finish, which already makes it a good return. If the LEGO Group had sold both models separately, they would have been fantastic sets in their own right, so to have both in one makes the deal seem otherworldly. (Okay, maybe not that good, but you get the point.) — Pictures — After I build a new Lego set I always have a few small pieces left. Did I forget to use them? Verified This set. This one. This is the single greatest set LEGO has ever released! What can I say. It just has everything. Especially great personal memories, what might play a role in naming this the best set ever. This is far from a unique problem for a build this big, with other models likely to run into similar issues. It is a reminder that you need to plan ahead with where you decide to set up base for the space shuttle as the further you progress, the fiddlier it becomes.

NASA Space Shuttle Discovery - LEGO

We’ve been to known to criticise the LEGO Group for how some of its products are priced, and what you actually get for that price (did someone say VIDIYO?), but to give credit where its due, the value here speaks for itself. Sullivan flew on three space shuttle missions and was the first American woman to complete a spacewalk as part of STS 41-G with the space shuttle Challenger on October 11, 1984. Most Lego sets are suited to play with from age 4 and up, because of the small parts they include. The special Duplo theme is suited for children aged 1,5 and up. The recommended age is always mentioned on the box. The building experience is a little hit and miss, though. The build for Hubble is simply joyous from start to finish, while the Space Shuttle starts off strong, but towards the end gets a little repetitive. It’s a minor negative as the finished model looks excellent, but it’s worth bearing in mind if you are on the fence about this set, or are deciding between this and another in a similar price range. It's hard to believe there once was a time, where we didn't have gear shifters. These are now so common-place in the Technic universe, that many sets wouldn't be possible without them. The Space Shuttle is the 2nd set to feature this system, after the 8880-1 Technic Super Car (next Classic Review?).Lego filmed an exclusive interview with Sullivan as she explained her experience in space along with showing a completed Lego model. In the review for the 10283-1 I have a side-by-side photo (at the end). They have nearly identical dimensions. The two biggest contributers to the discolouring of the plastic of Lego toys are long term exposure to sunlight and cigarette smoke. Try to minimise these when storing your Playmobil. We're nearing the end, with some last cosmetic things. The tail gets added. I'm not a fan of using the technic plates on the sides, but the additional strength makes it possible to display the model standing up, leaning on the tail.
