About this deal

This is a beautifully produced book published by the School of Life (founded by well known philosopher Alain de Botton). It is a very accessible starting point for exploring philosophy and how philosophical ideas can be applied to everyday life, in fact it is very explicit about this." Ewingel

Big Ideas For Curious Minds: An Introduction To Review - Big Ideas For Curious Minds: An Introduction To

The focus of these chapters are incredibly meaningful, some of my favourites include ‘People are unhappy, not mean’, ‘Learn to say what s on your mind’, ‘Good things are (unexpectedly) hard’ and ‘Politeness matters’. The book has been written by the fantastic School of Life and it is suggested for curious minds aged 9+. I think most adults would also find these ideas incredibly helpful to reflect on; who doesn’t need reminding that when someone is angry, maybe it’s not you who is responsible?” Louise Treherne, Role Models When you behave oddly on purpose, others feel more embarrassed than you do. They don't know how to respond, so they'll leave you alone. The idea behind reading BIG IDEAS is that they will be useful. These ideas were not exactly big and were not at all useful. Well, not unless you wanted to worship at the altar of Berkun's intellect. There's very little than cannot be said as praise for this book. And ironically, all that can be said can be summed up in just a few words. But, I'll take the longer route. This compassionate work also imparts the hows of being compassionate and empathetic to others, and the language is always clear. Refined, warm, and inviting illustrations of philosophers, objects, and scenes have a hint of the irreverence, showcasing playful facial expressions through impeccable sketches.

The book also looks to the future and asks the reader to imagine a world they would like to live in. What might they learn from self-knowledge? How can they grow, develop and create their own place in history? It is a thoughtful and inspiring introduction to the world around us, which encourages the child to engage with themselves and others through history. Take a moment to list your beliefs. If you're careful, you'll find wants lurking inside them. It's good to want things and fight for them, but misplaced belief is not the way to wisdom. This fascinating book will help you see design everywhere and question why it works—or why it fails” – Ellen Lupton, curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Thoughtful, often contrarian, and a great read.” — Richard Saul Wurman, creator of the TED Conference This is a collection of Scott Berkun's essays and it's... okay to decent. And ended on an up for me, so that's a positive.Good criticism generally comes with some degree of humility and respect for the other equally valid points of view. The better the critic, the more holistic their sense of how their own perspectives and tastes fit into the diverse pool of informed opinion. As you can see, I clearly loved this book. It's a collection of well-written essays that are meant to get you thinking about your life and the world. If you are so inclined, you can find them for free by poking around on scottberkun.com or elsewhere online.
