I signed up to the Pastest question bank 5 months before the January exam- I knew I would have to start preparing early with 2 children under 3. I slowly worked my way through the question bank, doing about 2-3 hours a week and making notes of and rehashing weak areas. We were still living in Malawi and our internet was terrible, so I managed to get hold of a few books of practice questions from Pastest and ISC Medical. The second section is clinical problem solving and measures the applicant’s ability to apply their knowledge and make clinical decisions. This is again based on foundation doctor level competency and covers 12 topic areas related to general medicine. There are only a small number of ophthalmology questions, and therefore revision must be broad to cover other speciality areas. The questions are clinical scenarios which require you to use judgement and problem-solving skills to diagnose and manage conditions. It comprises of 97 questions, of which 86 count towards the overall mark and 11 are pilot questions. You are allocated 75 minutes to complete this section. The questions are either extended matching questions (EMQ) or single best answers (SBA). Exam marking The PD paper is a situational judgement test and as such it's scoring can be quite confusing. So let's spend some time understanding how the PD questions are marked as once you figure that out it really helps you when you come to select your answers. During the exam there is a glossary of frequently used terms and a list of abbreviations – great to use if you’re less familiar with the UK medical system or if you just have a moment of panic and go blank. For the multiple-choice questions, candidates must choose three out of eight answer options provided. These should be the three most appropriate actions that, when taken in conjunction, will be a complete resolution of the circumstances. Multiple-choice questions are also marked by comparing candidates’ answers to pre-determined keys.
The majority of successful applicants spend 1-2 months preparing. Start their preparation around application time.
