About this deal

Unfortunately, while remarkably effective at helping to distribute poison, the bait boxes are not where the rats will eventually die. They will likely crawl into their nests or other hiding places and remain there when the poison takes effect. This means they may die within walls, in attics, and other hard to reach areas. Metal phosphides have been used as a means of killing rodents and are considered single-dose fast acting rodenticides (death occurs commonly within 1–3 days after single bait ingestion). A bait consisting of food and a phosphide (usually zinc phosphide) is left where the rodents can eat it. The acid in the digestive system of the rodent reacts with the phosphide to generate toxic phosphine gas. This method of vermin control has possible use in places where rodents are resistant to some of the anticoagulants, particularly for control of house and field mice; zinc phosphide baits are also cheaper than most second-generation anticoagulants, so that sometimes, in the case of large infestation by rodents, their population is initially reduced by copious amounts of zinc phosphide bait applied, and the rest of population that survived the initial fast-acting poison is then eradicated by prolonged feeding on anticoagulant bait. Inversely, the individual rodents that survived anticoagulant bait poisoning (rest population) can be eradicated by pre-baiting them with nontoxic bait for a week or two (this is important to overcome bait shyness, and to get rodents used to feeding in specific areas by specific food, especially in eradicating rats) and subsequently applying poisoned bait of the same sort as used for pre-baiting until all consumption of the bait ceases (usually within 2–4 days). These methods of alternating rodenticides with different modes of action gives actual or almost 100% eradications of the rodent population in the area, if the acceptance/palatability of baits are good (i.e., rodents feed on it readily).

We’ve pulled out some of the main features and selling points we could find for this Rentokill product and listed them below for you: Grain bait rat poison is commonly sold in handy sized, ready to use sachets perfect for using within rat bait trays or within inaccessible areas. Each granule has nibble ridges to encourage rats and mice to eat while deterring infestation from insects due to its S-methoprene treatment. Though it is on the pricey side, these bait chunks are suitable for killing and preventing a range of large and small rodent infestations. Unfortunately not anymore, there used to be a product that was odourless but it is no longer used in rat poison. The odour in rat poison is what attracts the rats, it’s strong garlic-like smell from the phosphine. Can you create a DIY rat poison?

Saravanan K, Kanakasabai R, Thiyagesan K (June 2003). "Field evaluation of difethialone, a new second generation anticoagulant rodenticide in the rice fields". Indian J. Exp. Biol. 41 (6): 655–8. PMID 15266918. Sometimes, anticoagulant rodenticides are potentiated by an antibiotic or bacteriostatic agent, most commonly sulfaquinoxaline. The aim of this association is that the antibiotic suppresses intestinal symbiotic microflora, which are a source of vitamin K. Diminished production of vitamin K by the intestinal microflora contributes to the action of anticoagulants. Added vitamin D also has a synergistic effect with anticoagulants. When handling rat poison, be sure to wear gloves at all times and wash your hands afterward. Handling poison probably won’t expose you to enough of it to become critically ill, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. To prevent home pets from accidental poison swallowing – use Rat Bait Stations like a triangular-shaped Protecta LP or ‘T’-shaped top-loaded JT Eaton , which you can attach somewhere on a fence or a tree. Make sure the bait is always safe from non-target species, by using a box, or covering with drainage pipes, slates or boards

Rats can develop “ trap shyness ” if they figure out inferior rats are dying because of poison exposure. Metal phosphides do not accumulate in the tissues of poisoned animals, so the risk of secondary poisoning is low. If your pet eats rat poison, call your veterinarian right away. The sooner your pet is treated, the less likely it is that permanent damage will occur. If at all possible, identify the active ingredient in the poison (or bring the poison’s container with you) so the vet can administer proper care. Why Trust Bob Vila

Fast-acting poison will kill a rat faster (with a proper dose) than a slow-acting poison, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. There is also an assumption that the poison I buy is stronger then what is available to the amatuer!!! Kapoor, Harit; Lohani, Kush Raj; Lee, Tommy H.; Agrawal, Devendra K.; Mittal, Sumeet K. Once the rats come across the sachets they will naturally knibble through it, consuming the poison and eventually killing them. Blunt force to the head – this isn’t exactly an ideal way to do it, and not for everyone, but a blunt force hit with a hammer to head, you need to ensure the rodent is trapped and can’t move to hit it accurately Mark E.
