Wedgwood, Hensleigh (1855). "On False Etymologies". Transactions of the Philological Society (6): 66.Mi dispiace parlare con poco entusiasmo di un libro, ma voglio spiegare il perché di un voto così basso. Perhaps the most satisfying feature is the emergence of the old Williamson sincerity that characterised so much of his [earlier] writings. This is one of the books where I'm in the middle between loving it and hating it. I'm luke-warm, not hot not cold. A fascinating portrayal of a vanished England as well as an unconventional mystery, The Dark Lantern exposes the grand “upstairs” of a Victorian home and the darker underbelly of its servants’ quarters. The clash between the classes makes for a suspenseful novel of mistaken identities, intriguing women, and dangerous deceptions.

Antique Railroad Lanterns and Lamps". Collectors Weekly. Auctions Online USA Ltd. n.d . Retrieved 17 February 2020. In real life Adela died aged just 52 in March 1892 from complications associated with diabetes, while her husband Henry William Williamson died two years later when he accidentally fell through a trapdoor while surveying a building in Newcastle – someone had opened it when he was in another room and he fell through on returning. Adela is buried in Sutton Cemetery (as is HW's sister Doris). Henry William was probably not the bounder that William Leaver considered him to be, as his daughter Maude wrote in one letter about how happy they had all been at home.

The word lantern comes via French [15] from Latin lanterna meaning "lamp, torch," [16] possibly itself derived from Greek. [17] Mantle lanterns use a woven ceramic impregnated gas mantle to accept and re-radiate heat as visible light from a flame. The mantle does not burn (but the cloth matrix carrying the ceramic must be "burned out" with a match prior to its first use). When heated by the operating flame the mantle becomes incandescent and glows brightly. The heat may be provided by a gas, by kerosene, or by a pressurized liquid such as "white gas", which is essentially naphtha. For protection from the high temperatures produced and to stabilize the airflow, a cylindrical glass shield called the globe or chimney is placed around the mantle. Brightwell has fashioned a multilayered, Upstairs Downstairs-type mystery that drew me in completely. When I finally paused to reflect, I realized it had everything but the kitchen sink. To wit: a young servant girl moves from the country to London and hides her past from her new employers; the matriarch of this household is on her deathbed while her daughter-in-law longs to return to Paris; and her son is intent on proving that anthropometry is a superior method to fingerprinting in identifying criminals. One more thing—when the eldest son is expected to return from India, what the family gets instead is a woman claiming to be his widow and the news that he has drowned at sea. Those of us who are self-confessed admirers of the translucent prose of the author have not been disappointed. . . . There is no need to point the fact that Henry Williamson’s place as the fore-most prose writer of the day remains largely unchallenged. . . . [analysis of plot] . . .
