About this deal

Some GPS units will actually take into account elevation and give you updated yardages. Some even take into account wind. Instead of a 150-yard shot, it might tell you it’s 130 yards. Unfortunately, the S42 doesn’t come with this feature. Garmin S42: Off-Course Features One area where the S42 has a slight advantage is in the number of preloaded golf courses. With 42,000+ courses compared to the S40’s 41,000+, the S42 ensures golfers have access to even more course information, which can be especially helpful for avid golfers who travel and play on different courses frequently. Battery Life and Performance Ultimately, both the Garmin S40 and S42 are excellent golf watches that offer a wealth of features and solid performance. Choosing between the two largely depends on your personal preferences and budget.

The Garmin Approach S42 GPS golf smartwatch with 1.2" colour touchscreen looks great on your wrist and on the course. The Garmin Approach S42 is an undeniably good looking golf GPS watch. In fact, it's a great looking watch full stop. COLOUR TOUCHSCREEN - Large 1.2″ easy-to-read colour touchscreen display with a metal bezel is stylish and lightweight. For golfers who are content with the features and performance of the S40 and don’t necessarily need the additional courses or slight improvements offered by the S42, the S40 may still be a great choice, especially if it’s available at a lower price. I’m sure the main reason you’d get a watch like this is that you want to use it on the golf course. You might be looking for a number of different features, most of which will be there but some might not. If you’re looking for the latest model with a few extra bells and whistles, such as more preloaded courses, improved battery life, and better screen resolution, the Garmin S42 is a fantastic choice. However, if you’re more focused on getting a reliable golf watch with proven performance and don’t mind missing out on a few of the latest upgrades, the Garmin S40 is still a great option. The S42 is one of Garmin’s best value golf watches and is the successor to the highly popular Approach S40. It has a larger screen and vastly increased battery life than the S40, but the golf functions aren’t too much different. In effect, you’re paying extra for the superior battery, as the S42 provides 15 hours in full GPS mode. That’s impressive and is more than enough even if you’re playing 36 holes.

If you were to ask me, I’d say the most convenient is a golf watch. Garmin makes some of the best units and their most popular model is the S42, which comes with the following: Also, you can see how you’re performing compared to other Garmin users (left image above). You can see how you compare to all golfers or narrow it down to people with the same handicap as you. How Accurate Is The Garmin S42? Compared to the S42, the S62 is slightly bigger and comes with a more durable screen. The overall size of the screen is very close and the battery life will last around 5 hours more. This means that you could easily finish 3 rounds of golf without having to charge the watch. I don’t know about you, but that’s more than enough for me. I always charge the watch after I play, so there has never been an issue.GOES BEYOND THE COURSE - Whether you just finished a game and find yourself in the clubhouse or want to hit the town, Approach S42 is great for everyday wear. That’s exactly what happened. I hit a nice, high drive but it had more cut on than I’d have liked. It cleared the trees and left me in decent shape. For my second shot I have 127 yards left to the centre with no hazards to worry about. I can see that the pin is at the front left of the green and a cool thing about the S42 is the ‘Move Flag’ function which means I can use the touchscreen to drag the pin location around the display of the green and it will give me an accurate yardage. I need to hit this around 122 yards, so an easy nine iron. So let me walk you through a few holes on my local course and explain how the S42 helps me navigate my way around. Other than that, the numbers were usually much closer. 1 or 2 yards don’t make a difference to me, and I think the same would go for you. Overall, I was pleased with the accuracy. Garmin S42 Battery Life You can also see an overhead view of each hole, where your shots went, and how far you hit each shot. We’ll jump more into this when we talk about the Garmin App.

In my experience, the Garmin S42 was always within 5 yards of course markers and my laser rangefinder. However, the yardages were much more accurate than that on average. The Garmin S42 is worth the money if you’re looking for a golf watch with the latest features, improved screen resolution, and an extensive database of preloaded courses. The added cost compared to the S40 may be justified for golfers who want a more future-proof watch and don’t mind spending extra for the latest model. Is the Garmin S42 better than the s12? I was actually really surprised when I compared the specs of each watch. I really have no idea why they needed to make a new one when the stats were essentially the same. The good news is that the prices are the same. Garmin S42 vs Garmin S12 In terms of comfort, the watch wasn’t the most comfortable one I’ve tried but it was a lot better than some. I don’t have the biggest wrists, so the square design of the Shot Scope V3 fits a little bit better. If you have bigger wrists, I think the round design of the S42 would be perfect.Whether you just got done with a game and find yourself in the clubhouse or you want to hit the town, Approach S42 is great for everyday wear. The only real downside is that the screen is relatively low resolution (just 176 x 176 pixels compared to 260 x 260 for the Garmin Approach S62), meaning less information can be displayed at once. There are also no touch controls (the watch is operated using four physical buttons along the edges). On the plus side, this means you're less likely to activate anything accidentally, but it also means navigating maps is less intuitive. Like all the best Garmin golf watches, it's pre-loaded with details of 42,000 courses worldwide, plus Garmin Autoshot to analyze and records shot distances. Green View allows you to position the pin manually using the large color touchscreen and shows you the green's true shape. Battery life is impressive too, lasting up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, or 15 hours with GPS enabled. Courses: What I like about Garmin is that they have the largest database of courses around the world. If your local course isn’t available then there’s really no point in buying the watch. If it’s not, you can always request that they map it ( do that here). Pro Tip 1:For more accurate yardages you can use the touchscreen to drag the flag around the green to better reflect the pin position.

The newer display style does away with a lot of the bezel for the most display in the smallest form factor. As a result the S42 offers a 1.2-inch colour touchscreen display with a 240 x 240 pixel resolution. That means great detail, which is useful when you're looking to adjust the tee on the green with your finger and every little movement counts for a yard.
