[37] John Byrne replaced Wolfman with issue #436 (January 1988) [38] and Ordway became both writer and artist with issue #445 (October 1988). [39] Writer/artist Dan Jurgens worked on the title from 1989–1991. Hank Henshaw, a character who would later become the Cyborg Superman, first appeared in issue #466 (May 1990). [40] By the late 1980s, the plots of the Superman books were often linked. To coordinate the storyline and sequence of event, from January 1991 to January 2002, "triangle numbers" (or "shield numbers") appeared on the cover of each Superman comic book. During these years, the Superman storylines ran with the story continuing through the titles Superman, Action Comics and later in two further series, Superman: The Man of Steel and Superman: The Man of Tomorrow. The Phantom Zone (1982) – A Steve Gerber miniseries that was controversial for depicting violence against the Metropolis police. The series took a hard look at the ethics of the Phantom Zone, released its villains and centered around Qwex-Ull, a framed Kryptonian who Superman was forced to release in Superman #157, 20 years earlier. The Adventures of Superman - Unrelated to the previous The Adventures of Superman title, this book, which began in 2013 and ended in 2014, was a three-times-a-month digital comic anthology of non-canonical Superman stories by rotating creative teams. The print edition collected three digital chapters a month. [14] [15]

In 1942, George Lowther, one of the writers on the Adventures of Superman radio show authored a prose novel about Superman. Although the book has been mostly forgotten today, it made some very big lasting contributions to the origin story. The novel renames Lora to Lara and changes the spelling of Jor-el’s name. (Still, note that Jor-el is missing his traditional capitalization.)

Siegel wrote to numerous artists. [19] The first response came in July 1933 from Leo O'Mealia, who drew the Fu Manchu strip for the Bell Syndicate. [21] [22] In the script that Siegel sent to O'Mealia, Superman's origin story changes: He is a "scientist-adventurer" from the far future when humanity has naturally evolved "superpowers". Just before the Earth explodes, he escapes in a time-machine to the modern era, whereupon he immediately begins using his superpowers to fight crime. [23] O'Mealia produced a few strips and showed them to his newspaper syndicate, but they were rejected. O'Mealia did not send to Siegel any copies of his strips, and they have been lost.
