Next up – and of particular interest to PS5 and Xbox Series X owners – the Q70A’s panel has a refresh rate of 120Hz and is capable of delivering 120fps on a 4K signal. If that wasn’t enough, it’s imbued with a new feature called ‘Motion Xcelerator Turbo+’ that enhances motion clarity for incredibly smooth, crisp gameplay, plus it supports FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) and promises an impressively low input lag, all combining to deliver a premium next-gen gaming experience for a mid-range price. ALLM (Auto Low-Latency Mode) is also on hand to boot the TV into a low-input Game mode when next-gen consoles are connected. The catch? There’s only one HDMI 2.1 input. The Samsung Q70 QLED was released in 2019. It comes in five screen sizes—a 49-inch, 55-inch, a 65-inch, a 75-inch and an 82-inch variation. All of which are available in the US and UK. As you can see, the calibrated results were reference level as DeltaE errors were all under 1 – so well below the visible threshold and no tint was seen in actual viewing material. As mentioned, the 10% stimulus error in the gamma is due to the local dimming not keeping up with our meter measuring, so we are not concerned about this. In general the Q70 handle this difficult material well, with very little haloing, blooming or clipping. However there were a couple of occasions where the local dimming was caught out, although with the less challenging content that was rarely an issue. While the design is important, it’s nowhere near as crucial as performance. In the Q70A, Samsung has tried to create a TV that pleases all comers, whether they be movie buffs or next-gen gaming fanatics. So, does the Q70A, a TV that’s still within the realms of affordability for most people, really cover all the bases? The Q70 also supports high dynamic range, specifically HDR10, broadcast HLG, and HDR10+. It can deliver 100% of the DCI-P3 wider colour gamut, and in testing it produced a peak brightness of 800 nits on a 10% window. From the top down we have two USB slots, an optical digital audio output and four HDMI inputs, followed by a LAN port and two satellite and one terrestrial antenna. While there are no screws used, everything is sturdy and safe. We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for four months in our Accelerated Longevity Test. At its heart sits Samsung’s latest Quantum Processor 4K, a powerful chipset that automatically adjusts the brightness and upscales the resolution of whatever content you’re watching to impressively detailed 4K. The Quantum Processor also optimises audio, regardless of source, to bring you an all-around more immersive experience. The Q70 also includes Samsung’s clever Ambient mode, which allows you to utilise your TV, even when you’re not watching it. This feature is energy efficient, and displays information such as the news or the weather, or even artwork and family photos. It can also blend in with the surroundings, making the TV virtually invisible when wall mounted.
Regardless of the material it was the detailed nature of the picture was readily apparent, with the AI-enhanced processing cleaning up more compressed content, and teasing every last pixel out of lower resolution material. The panel has plenty of brightness, and the colours are saturated but accurate, giving the images real pop. Since Bixby is actually built into the TV, rather than simply working with another device that includes a smart assistant, the experience is largely seamless. Bixby is best accessed by simply pressing the mic button on the remote. There is a near-field mic built into the TV but we’d recommend turning that off, unless you want Bixby springing into life every 10 minutes. The panel sits on a pair of feet that simply slot into place without the need for screws, providing solid support. However, those feet are set quite far apart, which means you’ll need a fairly wide surface on which to place the TV. Of course, if this is an issue then you could always opt to wall-mount the panel instead. The smart system is fast, responsive and intuitive to use, with a comprehensive selection of video streaming services that now exclusively includes Apple TV. As a result, the Samsung QE55Q70R is a great all-rounder that’s competitively priced for a mid-range model, making it worthy of recommendation. So you get the same launcher bar along the bottom as seen in previous years, and the useful second layer that provides easy access to other content (a feature that LG has copied on webOS this year). This is not a perfect result out of the box and we would like to see a more accurate performance from Samsung. However, for the vast majority of viewers, this is still the most accurate image quality out of the box compared to Standard and other modes.
The larger remote is a bit cramped and busy but all the main keys are in the centre within thumb reach and it will suit those users who like big buttons and easy to see lettering in a logical layout. The AI-enhanced Intelligent Sound mode uses machine learning to analyse the audio based on the environment and content, and then optimise it accordingly. As a result, the sound is enhanced based on its sonic signature, resulting in greater width and depth, and creating an acoustic experience that is better defined and more immersive.
