I love everything Giana Darling writes because she gives us books like When Heroes Fall. She takes a character like Elena who came across as very unlikable in the rest of the series and makes her not only relatable but lovable. Dante was easy to love but perhaps not always relatable in the other books now we start to realize why he's lovable and why he's a great man even if he's a mafia man. There isn't as much interaction between Elena and her family as I would've liked but given the fast paced nature of the narrative it was understandable. It's impossible to really talk about the plot without giving it away but it's compelling and hard to take a break from. Dante turns out to be just as dirty as we imagined if not more so. What ends up being amazing is how well Elena is his equal. I can't recommend this book enough. It is a cliff hanger but the second book is not far off. Fausto’s son Guilio was a fab character and his friendship with Francesca was just as good as it was in the previous book. His relationship with his father also evolved and the final couple of chapters showed it beautifully. I was all clean-up-on-aisle-my-panties over the prior books, but this one was somehow even steamier, a bit kinkier too since our dark, mysterious mafia man likes to bring a little of the dark edge into his bedroom play with his captive. And Enzo’s dirty mouth- PHEW. But he’s also got a tender heart that has me swooning- this man melts hearts and panties, and what a triumph! Mila took a character I didn’t even know if I could root for and now i’m desperate for more moments in his mind. Dante being in love with her sister Cosima, like okay I guess it was in the past?! But she still felt like she was a second option in this duet for every guy she had a relationship with. Including Dante of course. What did this story an injustice was 95% of it took place on a yacht in the middle of the ocean and I expected much more action in Enzo's book and it's such a shame because the author establishes her mfia world so well. I think Enzo and Gia should've gotten a duet. Giulio is the mafia Prince who abdicated and gave up his crown. He's the gay son of Fausto (from Mafia Mistress, Mafia Darling) who left the very homophobic mafia world and went on the run basically to save his life and keep his family safe after his long-term boyfriend was unalived by a car bomb meant for him.

Readers found they were entertained and invested the entire way through, and liked seeing Francesca attempt to fight against becoming a mafia wife since her mom detested that role herself and never wanted that for any of her daughters. Fausto starts out a major asshole, but does have a nice redemption arc over the course of this novel, particularly around Giullo, his son. I loved loved and loved Elena, the beautiful,smart , strong and absolutely breathtaking woman. She suffered so much throughout her life, some of the worst by her own blood members, that it's a freaking miracle how she still has love and kindness in her heart.

What a powerfully emotive and grippingly suspenseful finale to perhaps the most epic love story from Giana Darling to date! Lush with emotions, enthralling and passionate from beginning to end, I never wanted Elena and Dante’s story to end. Yet I was desperate to know just how they’d find their HEA. Just what happens when two self-proclaimed villains fall in love? They become each other’s heroes. the story kept moving at a wonderful pace where i never truly got bored. the spice never felt repetitive to me even though there was SO much of it making up the book. seeing how the MC's grow from enemies in a forced captor/captive situation to slowly realizing they actually have feelings for each other was just.. UGH SO MUCH ANGST MAAN, esp with the third act conflict.
