something but build the story forward from a human perspective, allowing the fantasy to shape, not to drive, the story. Bledsoe, Alex (August 17, 2009). "First dragons: Vermithrax from Dragonslayer". AlexBledsoe.com. Archived from the original on September 15, 2017 . Retrieved September 5, 2019. Dragonslayer has the following synopsis: Set in sixth-century England, an ill-tempered, fire-breathing creature—ominously known as Vermithrax Pejorative—terrorizes its citizens until a young sorcerer’s apprentice named Galen (Peter MacNicol) is reluctantly tasked with confronting the beast. For Galen to succeed, it will take more than magic to defeat the dragon. stage presence across the front and through the rears. They lost to Raiders of the Lost Ark, but winner Richard Edlund to this day says, “Dragonslayer probably should have won Best Visual Effects.”

Starring Peter MacNicol, Caitlin Clarke, Ralph Richardson, John Hallam, Peter Eyre, Sydney Bromley, Chloe Salaman, and Ian McDiarmid. In all ways, this is a real movie experience that defines the medium in many ways, for its technical artistry, its fantastical story, and its essentialThe Final Battle– the film’s stage-bound climax filmed against a blue screen. Editing, sound design, and Alex North’s music score. No, I’m happy to report to you that Guillermo and I never made such a call. We made many calls to each other about lots of other things, but not that. But I’m happy to report that within the home entertainment Group and the various departments at Paramount who are involved in decisions like this, there was a lot of fondness for this movie. It’s my understanding that this came from the ranks of the artists and technicians involved in these restorations. “Hey, can’t we now finally do Dragonslayer?” The decision was taken and I was in front of it thereafter. So I was very surprised and very pleased that such a thing could take place. Simulations Publications, Inc. produced the board game Dragonslayer, designed by Brad Hessel and Redmond A. Simonsen. [26] Dragonslayer's story bares several similarities to the first Star Wars film. But Star Wars itself is similar to the countless hero's journey stories that preceded it. Peter MacNichol stars as Galen Bradwarden, a young sorcerer apprentice to the old wizard Ulrich of Gragganmore (Ralph Richardson). After Ulrich is killed, Galen takes it upon himself to save Urland from the 400-year-old dragon named Vermithrax Pejorative. Caitlin Clarke co-stars as Valerian, who asked Ulrich to help her people. Valerian insists on going with Galen on his journey, which is made more troublesome by Urland guards who don't want Vermithrax killed because it would upset the status quo. (Photo: Paramount Pictures) A Long Way to Urland – Pre-production begins in England as the film takes shape. The young filmmakers seek gritty medieval realism through the production design, cinematography, and costumes.

In the aftermath, villagers inspecting the dragon's corpse credit God with the victory. The king arrives and drives a sword into the dragon to claim the glory for himself. As Galen and Valerian leave Urland together, he confesses that he misses both Ulrich and the amulet. He says, "I just wish we had a horse." Suddenly, a white horse appears, insinuating that the power of the amulet is now within Galen himself. The couple mount the horse and ride away. In the world of 500 AD magic and magicians are very much real, but in decline. The kingdom of Urland is plagued by a horrible fire-breathing flying dragon known as Vermithrax Pejorative. Urland’s King Casiodorus Rex (Peter Eyre), has made a terrible bargain with Vermithrax to keep its killings to a minimum: twice a year, it is appeased with a sacrificial virgin selected by a cruel lottery system. Apprentice sorcerer Galen (Peter MacNicol) possesses a magic amulet but hasn’t much control over its use. Encouraged to oppose the monster by his new friend, a boy named Valerian (Caitlan Clarke), Galen tries to enlist the aid of his master, the eccentric wizard Ulrich of Cragganmore (Ralph Richardson). textures and superior colors. Certainly, the Blu-ray is so good that often the UHD feels like it's improving by degrees, not by leaps and bounds, Dragonslayer is out on 4K Ultra HD + Digital & 4K Ultra HD + Digital SteelBook March 21, 2023, from Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment. However... This particular version is nothing more than a 4K disc in a steelbook. It says "digital copy" on it, but they don't offer a code. Now to the news... Kino Lorber Studio Classics will release Orson Welles’ The Lady from Shanghai (1947) on Blu-ray on 1/31. The company has also set Alexander Hall’s Little Miss Marker (1934) and David Greenwalt’s Secret Admirer (1985) for release on Blu-ray on 3/7. Also announced as “coming soon” to Blu-ray from the company are Rouben Mamoulian’s High, Wide and Handsome (1937) and Dave Thomas’ The Experts (1989). Vermithrax Pejorative– bringing a dragon to life, go-motion animation, practical animatronics, visual effects, and compositing. The studio also included nearly 16 minutes of screen tests of Peter MacNicol with Caitlin Clarke and Maureen Teefy for the role of Valerian and William Squire for the role of Ulrich. Robbins gets into his casting choices in the documentary, so this is a chance to see some of what he was working with when making decisions. I could see how Teefy and Squire weren’t quite right for their roles, despite how well they played them.

Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times called Vermithrax "the greatest dragon yet", and praised the film for its effective evocation of the Dark Ages. [13]I feel like there are a large number of people that are probably in their 30s who’ve never seen this movie because it’s never been in this kind of format. And I think it gets kind of lumped in with, and no offense to the movies I’m about to say, but I think it gets lumped in with movies from that era like Krull. My point is I think there are a lot of people who are going to be surprised how good this movie is.

if fresh out of theaters. It is essentially a buffed-up version of the concurrently released Blu-ray, which itself looks striking, here offering the same base with sharper Moving on to Paramount, retail sources are starting to indicate that the studio is planning to release Matthew Robbins’ Dragonslayer (1981) on 4K Ultra HD in January, with at least one listing the title for release on 1/10/23. I can confirm—based upon multiple sources—that the title is indeed coming and that it may even be a Paramount Presents title with at least one or two newly-created special features. Paramount should have AT MINIMUM added a Blu-Ray (non-4K option inside this case (there is PLENTY of room for two discs) and a PAPER version of the digital code (which they have done in the past, as this is not my first Paramount movie).

That group is led by Valerian (Caitlin Clarke), who harbors a secret, and the expedition is followed by Tyrian, who has been tasked by King Casiodorus with trying to learn what the group is up to and to stop them if necessary. The king is skeptical of attempts to kill the dragon because he has been sacrificing virgin women to it for many years, which keeps the creature at bay. He believes a change to that arrangement could lead to Vermithrax destroying his kingdom. I’ve been looking forward to this one for a long time. The last time I saw Dragonslayer was on HBO when I was a kid in the 80s. (I don’t recall seeing it in the theater.) I remembered some of the story beats and the big moments, but it was fuzzy in my brain, like an old school standard def video, until now. It is the second joint production between Paramount and Disney, after Popeye (1980), and is more mature than most contemporary Disney films. Because the audience expected the Disney name to be solely children's entertainment, the film's violence, adult themes and brief nudity were somewhat controversial, though Disney did not hold the US distribution rights. The film was rated PG in the U.S. Color Reproduction: Colors are bold and natural here. The palette on display here really does well with browns and greens. Contrast on nighttime helps to provide a nice HDR glow to fire, torches, dragon breath and the like. Dragonslayer’s terrific Vermithrax Pejorative is a flying, fire-breathing cross between the dragon in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty and various dinosaur creations of Jim Danforth. Vermithrax soars like a dive-bomber and crawls like a bat on its folded wings. Seen only in bits before his confrontation with the far-outclassed Galen, the monster shoots torrents of blast-furnace flame.
