About this deal

Chris and Katherine are avid collectors of rare and antiquarian books. Surrey Copper Distillery is inspired by literature, and Cooper’s book was the first manual to the art of distillation and remains an important reference work to this day. Whilst preparing the orange, place all the remaining dried fruit, cherries and almonds, apple and orange zest and juice in a bowl, together with the gin and orange liqueur. Cover and allow to sit overnight. Hydrogen fuel cell technologies can be implemented today across a wide-range of applications as demonstrated by our collaboration with our neighbours at The Surrey Copper Distillery. The Copperfield gin harnesses the ingenuity of two local businesses to demonstrate creative ways in which clean hydrogen can be used to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and support the transition to a zero-carbon future.”

To make each batch, they combine their brilliant Hills & Harbour gin with a full wheelbarrow of smoked pineapple and burnt oranges to create a 40% ABV sweet spirit that can be turned bitter, balanced or sweet simply by adding tonic, soda or lemonade respectively. Copperfield lends itself wonderfully to classic martinis as the gin’s delicate floral notes blend well with aromatic vermouths. The ‘perfect serve’ (the best possible way of lengthening the drink, simply and consistently, whether in a bar or at home)

14. EXPLORER’S GIN

A modern example of a classic, dry gin, Dartmouth Gin burst onto the scene 18 months ago – and has been scooping up industry awards left, right and centre ever since.

Let’s start with a traditional gin. You can tell a lot about a distillery and its products from the people behind it. In the case of Surrey Copper Distillery, the husband and wife founders are nothing short of experts – true distilling nerds. We’ve enlisted the help of Michael Dunnett-Stone, founder of Craftr.co.uk, the craft spirit marketplace, to help. From traditional to modern, these are his top five. Copperfield Vol.1, Surrey Copper Distillery A measure of Copperfield London Dry Gin poured over ice, add a premium tonic water and garnish with fresh lemon peel and a single mint leaf A measure of Copperfield London Dry Gin Volume 3 poured over ice. Add a floral tonic water with seasonal berries such as raspberries or strawberries. Equally distinctive is the beautiful bottle that Hollie has designed for their gin. Kensington grandeur at its finest, and a delightful addition to any drinks cabinet.A leading provider of hydrogen power generation technologies, AFC Energy have supplied a H-Power Tower used to distill the Copperfield gin. It produces electricity from hydrogen, resulting in much lower CO 2emissions throughout the distilling process than what is typically used. So Copperfield London Gin is rather good. It’s fairly classic, I’d say, and balanced — not trying to do anything too funky. Its flavour isn’t dominated by a particular characteristic, and as such, it’s a versatile beast. So let’s put it through the usual tests, shall we? Copperfield Gin and Tonic In line with gins of the 18 th century just 10 carefully selected botanicals are used (juniper, angelica, orris root, liquorice, cubeb berries, lemon peel, elderflower, caraway, cardamom and coriander).

Botanicals include Pink Peppercorns, Cubeb Berries, Rose Petals, Hibiscus, Elderflower and Lavender. Pop the orange in a small pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil the simmer for 30 minutes, or until tender. Keep the water level is topped up.

Our ethos is traditional,” says Chris. “Our gins to date have been classic London dry gins, made with plenty of juniper – that’s important to us. We also want them to be smooth enough to drink as a sipping gin, but robust enough to stand up to a premium tonic!” The collaboration exemplifies exciting British innovation and creativity, bringing together two neighbouring, Surrey-based businesses. It also highlights how hydrogen could support decarbonisation of the UK’s 400 plus gin distilleries and more broadly the food and beverage industry to meet net zero targets. The brand is named after George Chinnery, the English painter, who began his career in Dublin, before travelling to China. The bottle is inspired by these two parts of his career – Georgian Dublin and Imperial China. That balance I was just talking about? That stands Copperfield in pretty good stead when it comes to the ultimate test. It makes a martini that’s squarely classical, rather traditional. Which I like. The special edition ‘Copperfield H 2 Gin’ is being produced in a limited initial batch of 500 bottles and went on sale today. The partnership between the two companies in creating this unique gin is said to showcase the exciting innovation happening across Britain, as well as highlighting how hydrogen could support the decarbonisation of many of the UK’s gin distilleries. Copperfield London Dry Gin Volume Three is juniper-led and exceptionally smooth with traditional winter spice notes and subtle hints of bitter orange. Beyond the warm juniper taste, there are undertones of Darjeeling tea, vanilla pods, nutmeg and citrus flavours.
