About this deal

Whether you’re a driver or a cyclist, it’s important to know what a contraflow bus lane sign is. A contraflow bus lane is an extra lane that runs in a different direction to the other lanes, usually on a one way street. It’s designed to help keep traffic moving, but it also can make cycling a safer and more convenient activity. There are a number of pedestrian zone signs. One common version includes the ‘no vehicles’ sign (see above). This one is different: it specifies ‘no motor vehicles’ so, despite the words ‘pedestrian zone’, it’s permissible to ride a bicycle in this zone, essentially indicating a route for pedestrians and cyclists . . A panel beneath may give the zone’s hours of operation, along with any other exemptions.

If the painted white line is solid, it means that the lane is ‘mandatory’ and drivers have to stay out of it during its time of operation, i.e. they can't park or drive in it. Cyclists, however, don’t have to stay within it. Vehicles, especially large vehicles may often need to reduce speed to navigate the contraflow system. ensure you keep a safe distance from the vehicles in front. The motorway contraflow road sign is yellow with arrows telling you to stay in your lane. The red areas show where you should not drive. It will often also include the maximum speed limit. Reduce your speed– Contraflow systems usually have a reduced speed limit, so it’s important to slow down and obey the speed limit signs. You can push a bicycle along a road with this sign, but make sure you’re walking alongside it – anything else and you might get into trouble. Route to be used for pedal cycles only

This makes cycling a greater alternative to using the car, decreasing the number of vehicles on the road. As contraflow cycle lanes allow the cyclist to travel in both directions, this reduces the amount of cyclists who ride on the pavement. Contraflow systems are usually only in use during roadworks. The road may be closed for a short while, and drivers may be asked to merge into a different lane. Contraflow road works sign used on major routes such as motorways and dual carriageways Motorway contraflow systems the most appropriate lane when going straight ahead. Remember – traffic could be passing on both sides.

Pushing your bike is still permitted, so hop off until you see a sign giving you the go-ahead to ride on. No vehicles Full width advisory lanes can be used on roads of any width, even the narrowest. Advisory cycle lanes should be thought of as indicators of the space cyclists need when they are being overtaken, not necessarily as exclusive space for cyclists. Traffic in right hand lane of slip road joining the main carriageway has priority over left hand lane Laws RTA 1988 sect 36& RTRA sects 5& 8 This rule is in the context of additional rules for high-speed roads In cases where there is a solid white line (eg a bus lane or a mandatory cycle lane) then you are not allowed to cross it apart from exceptional circumstance (your lane is obstructed or to overtake a slow cyclist). Again that is exactly the same as for solid white lines on two way streets.

Drivers were better at recognising signs that issued direct commands, with 59% able to name the no waiting sign and 58% the no stopping sign. Seventy-five per cent of those quizzed understood what the ‘keep left’ sign meant; sadly the survey didn’t reveal how many of the remainder were scooter riders. This sign indicates that only pedal cycles can travel against the flow of traffic down this one-way street. Cyclists should still try to be aware of the flow of traffic, even if they have a marked lane, just to stay extra safe. No through road except cycles For students of this type of thing, it's perhaps worth looking at the other end of this street which has NO ENTRY signs with no exception for cyclists.

Theory test revision: What can you expect to find when there’s a contraflow system ahead on a motorway? Cycle lanes are painted on the carriageway, and the surface is often coloured red or green (the chosen colour has no significance). Pedal cyclists experience a lower crash rate when they travel on a contraflow cycle lane. This is in contrast to motor vehicle traffic flow, where pedal cyclists are more likely to crash when they are near a junction or roundabout. What should you do when going through a contraflow system on a motorway? It’s likely there will only be cones in place to separate you and the oncoming motorway traffic so it’s really important you drive safely. On approaching the system, you should get into the correct lane as directed by the road signs in plenty of time. You should stay in that lane throughout the contraflow. Allowing contraflow cycling can be achieved in a number of different ways which may or may not involve a cycle lane. For example an "Except Cyclists" sign under the no entry sign, a "false one way" - where motor traffic is bared from entering the street at one end, a shared bus & cycle lane etc.
