About this deal

No, RJ45 and CAT6 are not the same. The RJ45 is a connector, while CAT6 (CATEGORY 6) is a model of twisted-pair cables. But, CAT cables are commonly referred to as RJ45 cables or Ethernet cables. Applications of RJ45 cables Deciding on which standard is appropriate will depend on individual design needs and whether a straight-through cable or crossover cable is being used. Straight-through (patch cable) has the same wiring standard at each end, while crossover cable connects the same types of devices by having T568A at one end and T568B at the other end. Rolled or rollover cables are flat and connect devices to a network switch console port. They are only used to establish an interface and do not transmit data. https://geni.us/Cat6– A drum of Ethernet cable – probably either Cat5e, Cat6 or possibly even Cat6a, it will depend on your use case but we won’t get into the differences in this article Ethernet cables come with RJ45 connectors on both ends. Because of this, an Ethernet cable is sometimes designated as an RJ45 cable. These cables are often used to connect computers onto Ethernet networks. The RJ45 connector resembles a six-pin RJ11 connector, though the 45 is slightly wider. Since each connector has eight pins, an RJ45 Ethernet cable will have eight wires of varying colours. RJ45 cables can be wired according to two different schemes, T-568 A or B, depending upon the devices to be connected within the network. Crossover patch cables have different wiring schemes on each end to support computer-to-computer connections. For years and years I’ve been putting RJ45 plugs onto ethernet cable with closed plugs where you have to measure the length, or guess, and then hope and pray they all align up fully and properly at the tip and don’t swap places inside without you realising until it’s too late, and then crimping with one of these standard tools.

Although I got pretty good at it, I’ve still lost count over the years of the number of times I’ve had to snip an end off and start again from scratch, wasting a plug which can’t be used again and making the cable shorter and shorter with each failure. What is interesting about this plug is that it will also connect right into any standard RJ45 port. However, the way you work with it and the size of cable it accepts could not be more different. This one requires a special crimp/termination tool, and it is meant to be used with shielded Ethernet cable. For more on how to actually terminate one of these beasts see How To: Terminate a Shielded Cat6/Cat6A Standard Load Bar RJ45 Connector With External Ground .RJ45 connector uses twisted-pair cables. These twisted pair cables are available in Unshielded Twisted Pair and Shielded Twisted Pair. Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) What does this little connector actually do and how does it work? Let’s unravel the mystery and unplug some myths and get to the reality of the matter.

IEEE 802.3at, 802.3af and 802.3bt– the various power over Ethernet (PoE) standards for RJ45 connectors capable of supplying electrical current to the end device The ability to supply DC power over these wire pairs eliminates the need for separate power wiring. With no need for separate electrical cables, outlets, or installation, PoE has grown rapidly thanks to those provided cost savings and flexibility. PoE is also designed to be safe, reliable, and scalable. If you’re adding cabling to an existing setup, or replacing a faulty end, then make sure you use whatever standard is already in use at the location, to make things easier for yourself and any other engineers who might do work there after you.

RJ45 cables are commonly used in Ethernet connections. Yet, they are useful for other applications also. For example: What’s interesting is the confusion surrounding this unassuming little part. The very name can generate confusion. Here’s the RJ45 Pinout T-568B diagram which was the first result in Google Images in the video demo: https://www.showmecables.com/blog/post/rj45-pinout As visible in the figure above, both connectors at the ends of the cable have different standards. One side of the cable is connected in T568-B standard, while the other is connected in T568-A standard. What are the different categories of twisted pair cables?
