Throughout the early part of the book she talks about hiding her feelings and loving dance because she can become another person. Then Michaela and her best friend are adopted by an American couple, and Michaela begins to take dance lessons. The world of ballet can be racist, and Michaela has to fight for a place amongst the ballet elite, despite hearing the words America's not ready for a black girl ballerina . The difficulties of an African in a white ballet environment are explored, racism and tradition and the solutions make this a veryworthwhile tale. Most of the brutality occurs at the start of the memoir as Michaela's early years in Sierra Leone are covered.While attending the Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre, Michaela worked hard to develop her skills so that she could overcome stereotypes of conventional beauty and racial barriers in the world of ballet. When the wind blew a magazine with a picture of a ballet dancer onto the orphanage gates, she looked so happy that I promised myself that I’d be a ballerina one day. The connection to current society is clear as many people face hardships and obstacles in their lives. It's simply written, in a very good way and probably because of the primary audience of younger readers. Then the civil war rips her family apart: her father is murdered by rebels, and her mother sickens and dies.

The only slight downside to the book was that it was quite simply written, and although the author used descriptive language, parts of it seemed more suitable for a younger age group. Unable to reply due to not being able to speak much English, Michaela went on her tippy-toes and twirled around the room, then showing her mother the picture of the ballerina.With classics such as Ted Hughes's The Iron Man and award-winners including Emma Carroll's Letters from the Lighthouse, Faber Children's Books brings you the best in picture books, young reads and classics. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. We wouldn't even know that at least her mother and perhaps her father were Jewish, if Hannukah presents weren't mentioned just in passing. The world of ballet is a racist one, and Michaela has to fight for a place amongst the ballet elite, hearing the words "America's not ready for a black girl ballerina". A heart-breaking, inspiring autobiography by a teenager who shows us that, beyond everything, there is always hope for a better future.
