About this deal

Thank you Lisa for being so honest with your experience, this book really helped me and I related to everything she went through with ivf. Excellent book for anyone thinking about adoption and asking themselves whether they are right for it. As someone finding unable to have children now through sudden medical reasons before being able to try, I found it comforting/interesting to hear her views. An easy listen with a lot of relatable content, but lacked the depth of was looking for in the topic of adoption. Lisa's first book was published in 2012 and was a Sunday Times bestseller, and she has subsequently written 3 other cookery books.

Lisa’s words are beautiful and so many sentences could only be truly understood by those who have gone through the same journey. It covers some really powerful topics such as miscarriage and the struggles of those who are trying to have a family. Just a few days later I was at work, suffering the worst cramps and pains, and then collapsed on the floor.

After Lisa had an ectopic pregnancy, she tried many things after to conceive again but sadly she failed to get pregnant. Angela had given me a brand-new changing bag that she had been given (and hadn’t used) and I was scared that they would think that I hadn’t listened to anything they had said about being very low-key and keeping everything the same. As someone who has gone through 5 rounds of IVF and had two miscarriages, this book resonated deeply with me. The journey Lisa and Chris, her husband at the time, take through this book is a bittersweet story of the ups and downs of trying for a baby and it not going the way others take for granted.

Having experienced infertility before going on to have my own children, I felt a strong bond with Lisa and hope that others will be able to take comfort from her story. I don’t know how Billie’s life is going to turn out, but I will do everything I can to help her be the happiest she can be. Ive had this book on my tbr list for a while, as I knew I needed to be in the right place mentally to be able to read it and to have the time to reflect. When that began to look too complicated legally and also too expensive, I launched us into adoption, not taking a breath. She really needed us, and she needed us to step up to the mark and be the grown-ups and not let her down. For anyone who has ever found themselves facing the unexpected in life – whether that’s infertility, adoption, grief or any other personal challenge – this is an uplifting and honest account of finding love in unexpected places, and building your life on your own terms.
