About this deal

Death threats and petitions came his way when the news came of him remaking the film because of writing Scooby Doo movies.

Next are 9 deleted, extended, and alternate scenes with optional commentary by Snyder and Newman; the theatrical trailer; and a S till G allery containing 96 on-set photos, behind-the-scenes photos, posters, lobby cards, and pages from the Japanese pressbook. This and 28 Days Later were also responsible for a minor trend of fast-moving zombies, which is now all but abandoned, especially after the success of The Walking Dead and its spin-offs.

Effects are spread across the speakers, with some heft supplied by the sub; it is quite atmospheric with the surrounds coming into play, obviously limited by the source, this is never-the-less natural sounding. There’s still a few weird spots (like the helicopter scene on the roof in the sky has some vertical lines), but overall this is a fantastic looking 4K UHD disc that is a hefty upgrade over the Blu-ray. On the other hand, Dawn of the Dead 2004 has one of the strongest openings for a horror film of recent memory, which grabs you by the throat and makes you sit up and pay attention. It also helps to have a film with four main characters with distinct personalities that you like and care about, despite their flaws and sometimes dumb decisions. Bottom line: the extras for Second Sight’s new release are not complete (not by a longshot), but the 4K remasters and the addition of the new extras, the booklets, the CD soundtracks, and the overall packaging more than make up for it.

Chainsaws and shotguns are treated with visual cool, delighting in the slaughter, and mirroring the national disinterest in gun debates. DTS-HD Master Audio with optional subtitles in English SDH, the latter a downmix of its multi-channel cohort. The Easter E gg can be found by pressing up while hovering over Bonus, which will take you to the Surviving the Dawn featurette. I used to feel Dawn of the Dead was a little overlong, dragging its feet more than Night, but I didn’t get that sense at all this time around. Now brought up in conversations as one of the better horror remakes alongside John Carpenter’s The Thing, David Cronenberg’s The Fly, and Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Zack Snyder’s (and to a large degree, James Gunn’s) Dawn of the Dead is a completely different beast than Romero’s, and depending upon who you ask, its modern-day equal. What I found interesting, watching the film now, was how much of it reminded me of the current COVID situation. He’s honest about some weaker effects (largely the blood colour) and talks about how his work advanced from this on to Day of the Dead. It wasn’t Tom Savini’s first film as a special effects make-up artist, but it’s the one in which he made his name and lead to him finding fame with Friday the 13th not long after. It’s a clean, sharp image with mild speckling here and there, though some of the CGI-based visual effects don’t hold up in higher quality.

The mono track is clean and bright, and as faithful as you can get to the original cinematic experience. His work here maybe isn’t as refined as his later work, but this is purely due to the sheer volume of effects in the film. Rubinstein’s commentary on the Cannes cut talks more about the business side of the production, so offers yet another markedly different take. There are a bunch of special features on a seperate bluray disc also, among them are documentaries, commentary tracks, interviews, trailers and tv-spots. British label Second Sight has dated its upcoming 4K Blu-ray release of the 4K restoration of George A. NEW Zombies and Bikers, with John Amplas, Roy Frumkes, Tom Savini, Christine Forrest, Tom Dubensky, Tony Buba, Taso Stavrakis and a whole host of zombies and bikers! In Europe, Second Sight Films conducted a full 4K restoration of the original 35mm camera negatives for Romero theatrical cut, along with 4K remasters of the "Cannes" Extended version from the internegative and the Argento Cut from the interpositive. Although confined to the center of the screen with outstanding dialogue reproduction from start to finish, dynamic range is surprisingly extensive with noteworthy clarity in the higher frequencies.

This was part of the agreement made, as Argento’s company financed much of the film and he felt some tweaks would need to be made for non-American markets.Dawn is certainly a reflection of its time, dated in every conceivable way, but its concepts and execution are still key to its long-term success. Even though he doesn’t stick to the more methodical stylings of Romero, Carpenter, or Argento, Snyder still pays homage to the previously mentioned artists by interjecting in several hints and nods through various scenes and musical choices. Vocals are precise and intelligible throughout, and a hearty low-end provides the visuals and music with an appreciable sense of presence.
