Miller’s new book is a great companion for anyone who desires to grow spiritually in a life of prayer. The best thing about A Praying Life is that you soon realise that it's really not just about prayer: it's about living as a Christian. I do appreciate the practical help near the end, and it’s got wise nuggets throughout, but I don’t think they redeem the whole book, and there are enough pitfalls to say, No, I think you should spend your time on something more edifying. Of course, it is possible for a person to have a regular prayer life and still place his confidence in himself rather than in the Lord; there is a place for prayer in performance-based religion.
