About this deal

Canby, Vincent (26 March 1977). "The Eagle Has Landed (1976)". The New York Times . Retrieved 25 September 2014.

Initially, Radl also thinks this is a waste of time, but soon comes across some valuable intelligence. German spy Joanna Grey, code name Starling, reports that Churchill is planning to spend a weekend at a country house near the village of Studley Constable, where she is based. Joanna is an Afrikaner woman with a hatred of the British after British soldiers assaulted her, and her family was killed in the Anglo-Boer war. The Eagle Has Landed introduces Liam Devlin, a fast-talking agent for the Irish Republican Army, who is featured in three of Higgins’ subsequent thrillers. Though nominally about espionage, as the story revolves around an imaginary plot by the Nazi military intelligence agency, the Abwehr, in 1943, the novel is more properly a thriller, action-filled virtually from the beginning to the end. Patterson is survived by his second wife, Denise Palmer, a literary agent, whom he married in 1985; and by three daughters, Sarah, Ruth and Hannah, and a son, Sean, from his first marriage, to Amy Hewitt, which ended in divorce.

The Eagle Has Landed: Analysis

Higgins is especially skillful in building suspense and moving the action forward by dipping into the thoughts of dozens of individual characters. In the hands of a less accomplished writer, this story would be extremely hard to follow, because it shifts from one scene and one character to the next with great regularity; a reader would be likely to forget who is who and what’s really happening. Higgins makes it easy to follow along. The film was a success, with Lew Grade saying "it made quite a lot of money". [14] ITC made two more films with the same production team, Escape to Athena and Green Ice. [15] The Eagle Has Landed spent a week as the number one film in the United Kingdom (9 April 1977) and was the fifteenth-most successful film of 1977. [16] How do you NOT love Klink and Schultzie? So sorry Mr. Higgins, but as far as I am concerned, Hogan and his band of Heroes beat you to the punch as far the “humanization of the German solider” is concerned. Thus, no points for ground-breaking, cultural revelations.

So for all of the above reasons, I just never found myself pulled into this one. There were some parts I liked and it certainly had some moments, but there were not enough of the goodies for me to be able to say I liked it. So given all that slobbering, fanboyish praise, why, in the name of all that is good and holy, did I give this ONLY 2.0 STARS?? First, please stop yelling at me and I will tell you. See, as good as I thought the novel was on a technical level, I found the story itself fairly dry at the best of times and actually quite boring at the worst of times. Now boring or dry when dealing with non-fiction or even classics may still earn 3 stars (or higher) if they impart deeper meaning or just load you up with knowledge. However, fiction is different. I read that to enjoy myself and so dry and boring become tough hurdles to overcome. Steiner and his men are professional soldiers, not Nazis. They are in a penal unit, after attempting to stop an SS unit killing a Jewish girl. Steiner himself has an old-fashioned code of honour, and his father is an anti-Nazi who the Gestapo have imprisoned. He also has no negative personal characteristics at all. His men love him. Women love him. He’s thoughtful, charming and strong. He inspires instant respect in everyone he meets. The Household Cavalry". Archived from the original on 23 February 2015 . Retrieved 23 February 2015. The fact that the final outcome of the story was known at the very beginning of the story took away much of the suspense/mystery for me. Now this is not always the case when reading about real life events in which the final outcome is well known, as I have read a lot of historical ficiton and real life crime fiction that kept me at the edge of my seat. However, in this case, the slow, methodical planning of the kidnapping just never seemed to pull me in and so I found the story very slow moving. Now since Communists are notorious liars, this entire tale of events has been met with deep skepticism by Western scholars. Several important issues stand out: Hauptmann Erich Kraemer – a Fallschirmjager officer whose unit is enlisted by Steiner to thwart Himmler's assassination attempt on Hitler.
